Winter Solstice Altar




     Today, December 21st, we honor the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, which heralds the return of the sun. This day has been celebrated in many cultures throughout history, but was largely forgotten as the celebration of Christmas grew more popular. Growing up, I never heard anything about the solstice, but judging by the numerous Facebook posts about the winter solstice today, I believe it has regained popularity in the world. 

    This is the first time I have added a winter solstice altar to my Christmas decor. Instead of red, I'm displaying a yellow bird and lemons to honor the rebirth of the sun. Of course the candle flames are another reminder of the sunlight we will celebrate as it increases every day after today. 

    I will close with one of the odes to the solstice I found on Facebook today:

May you find peace in the promise of the solstice night,
that each day forward is blessed with more light.
That the cycle of nature, unbroken and true,
brings faith to your soul and wellbeing to you.
Rejoice in the darkness, in the silence find rest,
and may the days that follow be abundantly blessed ..

Gift from the Sun

     When I created this arrangement in our living room it was not intended to be an altar, and yet it does include three of the elements necessary for a sacred nature space. The earth is represented by the fruit and bare twigs which are replaced by pussy willow in the Spring.  On the wall a partridge in a pear tree represents the element of air. Above that is my father's wood representation of the Great South Bay, the body of water near my childhood home.      The only element missing in this arrangement is fire. But one morning the sun hit the nearby piano lamp in such a way that it created a halo of light over this scene, transforming it into a sacred space. Blessings from the Sea

          I grew up in the little hamlet of Sayville on Long Island, New York, just a five-minute walk from the Great South Bay. Several ferries to Fire Island left from a dock at the end of our street. I took it for granted that I could visit the ocean beach almost any time my family or friends invited me to go. Every summer I spent as much time as possible swimming, sunbathing, getting burnt, and collecting shells.      When the time came for me to "spread my wings," I decided I had to get off Long Island so that I wouldn't have to drive through city traffic in order to travel anywhere else in the country. I also thought it was time to trade the ocean for mountains, and a different kind of scenery. I met my husband in the Rocky Mountains of Yellowstone Park. Abundance and Gratefulness

     The hutch that Mark built many years ago is now decorated for  Thanksgiving with symbols of abundance and gratefulness. The book, One Hundred Graces by Marcia and Jack Kelly   was a gift from one of the doctors Mark worked with in Worcester, New York.  This book includes blessings from many traditions, including  Christian and Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist, Islamic and Native American. No matter who or what we believe to be the source of our nourishment, people of every faith offer thanks to show our gratefulness before partaking of the food provided.      The bread plate that says: "Give us this day our daily bread" was a gift from Mark's sister that offers the beginning of a Christian prayer. The whole prayer is in our book and goes like this: Give us this day our daily bread,  O Father in heaven, and grant that we who are filled with good things from Your open hand may never  close our hearts to the hungry,  the homeless, and the poor; in the name of the Father, and

Advent Wreath

     I like to make an Advent wreath for our home each year. The traditional candles are three purple, one pink, and the white Christ candle in the middle. I'm not a very traditional person, so I use different colored candles - sometimes red, sometimes blue, last year purple and pink, and this year green. Green is my favorite color. It symbolizes healing and eternal life - good things to think and pray about during the holiday season.      We lit the first candle on Sunday, November 27th, to symbolize the Hope of Advent. We hope that Christ will be born in every human heart this Christmas - or at least very soon! I am not referring to the person Jesus, whose birth many celebrate on Christmas Day. Christ consciousness refers to the spiritually evolved state of being that Jesus exemplified. One does not have to be a Christian to attain Christ consciousness. Ode to Autumn

       Like many people, I enjoy creating nature arrangements for each season. I usually try to include something symbolic of each of the four elements as done with earth-based religious altars. While I do not subscribe to a particular nature-worshipping religion, such as paganism, I do embrace the pantheistic belief in  the Divine as immanent; the Divine existing in everything and everything having a Divine aspect. (After all, didn't God create the universe from Godself?)     The earth element can be symbolized by rocks or crystals, or anything that is grown in the earth. My fall arrangement includes dried grasses, pumpkins, and pine cones. The pumpkins remind us of nature's abundance, especially present at harvest time, while the dried grasses and seeds add a touch of melancholy to the scene because I always hate to see summer go. Day of the Dead Altar

       Many of us enjoy arranging still lifes in our homes. Perhaps a new one for each season, or for certain holidays. A still life can include flowers in a vase, framed pictures, a bowl of fruit, or any decorative objects that have meaning to us, or just look good! I like to arrange things that have symbolism and meaning for me. Sometimes I call these arrangements “little altars.” However, I looked up the definition for “altar” and discovered that it is “ a raised area in a house of worship where people can honor God with offerings. It is prominent in the Bible as "God's table," a sacred place for sacrifices and gifts offered up to God.” My altars are not offerings to God, but rather sacred places that connect me either to the Divine, to Nature, or to some spiritual aspect of my life, such as familial love.  This blog gives me the opportunity to create sacred spaces and altars to share with readers.
